What a driveway quote should include
- Compacted asphalt thickness in writing.
- Base stone depth and whether soft spots are removed.
- Grading and drainage plan.
- Tear-out, haul away, disposal, and edge treatment if needed.
- Warranty terms and what maintenance is excluded.
Why cost per square foot varies
Small driveways often cost more per square foot because mobilization, equipment, trucking, and crew time do not scale down perfectly. Poor access, demolition, drainage, and base repair can also move the real price above a simple material estimate. Adding to an existing driveway follows the same math on a smaller area; see driveway extension cost.
Formula
(order_tons * price_per_ton) + (area_sq_ft * labor_rate) + (area_sq_ft * base_prep_rate) + haul_costThese are planning estimates. Confirm local material density, supplier tickets, contractor scope, drainage, base condition, and local code before buying material or signing a contract.
