Sources, Assumptions and Methodology

Every calculator on this site uses the same set of planning assumptions. This page documents the density values, waste allowances, truckload size, formulas, source references, image attribution, and the limits of the tools.

Calculation assumptions

  • Hot mix asphalt default density: 145 lb/ft³.
  • Warm mix asphalt default density: 142 lb/ft³.
  • Cold patch / cold mix default density: 135 lb/ft³.
  • Compacted asphalt millings default density: 130 lb/ft³.
  • Loose asphalt millings default density: 100 lb/ft³.
  • Typical waste allowance defaults range from 6% to 12%, depending on project type.
  • Truckload estimate assumes 22 tons per common tri-axle load.
  • Per-square-foot ranges vary by region, scope, base condition, drainage, and access.

Core formulas

Asphalt tons:

area_sq_ft * (compacted_thickness_inches / 12) * density_lb_per_cu_ft / 2000

Order tons with waste:

raw_tons * (1 + waste_percent / 100)

Cost per square foot:

(material_cost + labor_cost + base_prep_cost + haul_cost) / area_sq_ft

Sealer gallons:

area_sq_ft * coats * surface_factor / coverage_sq_ft_per_gallon * (1 + waste_percent / 100)

Limits and disclaimer

The calculators on this site are planning tools for early budgeting and quote review. They do not replace a site visit, local building code, engineering design, supplier delivery tickets, or a written contractor scope.

Density, waste, truck capacity, and price are regional. Confirm material density and quoted tonnage with your supplier and contractor. Confirm thickness, base depth, drainage, and warranty terms in writing before signing any paving contract.
