Sealcoat material estimate
Estimate how much asphalt driveway sealer to buy before sealcoating. Adjust for coats, surface condition, coverage rate, waste, and pail price. Use it as a driveway sealer, blacktop sealer, or sealcoat coverage calculator for any home asphalt job.
Calculator
Estimate gallons, pails, and cost for driveway sealcoating.
Adjust coverage for rough, porous, or weathered asphalt.
A 5-gallon pail of asphalt driveway sealer covers about 400 to 500 square feet in one coat on smooth, previously sealed asphalt, at 80 to 100 square feet per gallon. On rough or porous asphalt the same pail covers about 300 to 375 square feet, because worn asphalt drinks more material. Most driveways get two coats, so plan on roughly 200 to 250 square feet of finished two-coat coverage per pail.
| Asphalt condition | 1 coat per 5-gal pail | 2 coats per 5-gal pail |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth or previously sealed | 400 to 500 sq ft | 200 to 250 sq ft |
| Weathered | 340 to 425 sq ft | 170 to 210 sq ft |
| Rough or porous | 300 to 375 sq ft | 150 to 190 sq ft |
To size a specific driveway, enter its square footage in the calculator above. As a quick guide, a 1,000 square foot driveway needs about 20 to 25 gallons, or four to five pails, for two coats, plus 10 percent for waste and edge work.
Sealcoat protects and darkens the surface, but cracks and soft spots should be repaired before sealing. Crack filler and patching material are separate from sealer coverage.

FAQ
About 400 to 500 square feet in a single coat on smooth, previously sealed asphalt, or 300 to 375 square feet on rough or porous asphalt. Over the typical two coats, plan on roughly 200 to 250 square feet per 5-gallon pail.
Divide driveway area by the coverage rate, multiply by the number of coats and surface factor, then add waste. A 1,000 square foot driveway needs about 20 to 25 gallons for two coats.
About 20 to 25 gallons, or four to five 5-gallon pails, for two coats at 80 to 100 square feet per gallon. Add 10 percent for waste and edge work.
Two thin coats for a fresh sealcoat or badly weathered asphalt. One coat is enough for a maintenance reseal on asphalt sealed within the last few years.
No. Use crack filler first, then sealcoat after repairs are ready.
